Did you know that there was a “Hat Person of the Year”?

No, me neither. 

Well, there is, and Princess Kate Middleton has been named queen of women’s hats. Personally, I think that everyone in attendance at the royal wedding should have collectively been named “Hat people of the year.” I think it was a group effort that made anyone take notice of Kate’s wonderful fashion accessories.  So, let’s give credit where credits due and democratize the Hat awards.

I do like Kate’s hat.  Not in an I would actually wear it sort of way, but in it’s an impressive that you can pull that off sort of way.  (For a red cap you can definitely pull off check out Abbie Madcapz).  Here at Madcapz, we strive to make fun women’s hats, so I think that the award should be given to the woman who has the most fun wearing the hats.  How we would measure that, I’m not sure, but I think “person who enjoys hats the most” is an award I could get behind.

So what do you think?  Is Kate Middleton worthy of such a title?  Who would you rather see crowned? 

I would like my women’s caps to make you happy.  I understand that they are women’s baseball caps, essentially things you wear on your head, not a magic happiness token (although with the Harry Potter series over, perhaps the world is ready for the Tales of the Magic Happiness Hat).  But still, I think caps can make you happy.  If just for a second.  When you get it as a gift.  When you put it on.  When you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror wearing the cap.

Many of the women who wear caps are suffering from hair loss, due to chemotherapy, alopecia, grave’s disease (like myself), or other medical reasons.  I know my own story, I won’t claim to know yours.  I would like for my caps to make you feel just a little bit better about it.

It’s almost February, so you know what that means…LEAP YEAR DAY!  Yes, I know that’s not really a thing, and this post is obviously going to be about Valentine’s Day, but I think you should buy all of your loved ones Leap Year gifts, claim you do it every four years year, and then act really hurt when they don’t have anything for you.

But I digress.  We’re talking about Valentine’s Day and possibly golf. 

I think of myself as being pretty good at giving gifts. I listen to what people are interested in and try to get them something that at least tangentially has to do with the their hobbies. And for those relatives who don’t really seem to be on the family tree and only show up for gift giving holidays, I am a big fan of gift cards.

Maybe you’re good at giving gifts.  Or maybe you’re not.  Either way , if your significant other (or mother, or sister, or friend, or whoever your Valentine is this year)is a golfer, consider yourself lucky, at least you have a jumping off point.  However,  you may be at the point in your relationship where you have given every book on golfing, scoured the earth for every golf themed piece of jewelry, and tried really hard to find heart-shaped golf ball until you realized that that just wouldn’t work as balls have to be circular.

Tell us about your Valentine’s Day plans.  Do they involve golf or the more traditional dinner rout?

Fashion is deeply personal.  Yes, there are seasons where everyone appears to be wearing the same shade of blue.  And yes, there is no way I could honestly say that a million other woman don’t own my coat.  Or my favorite pair of shoes.  But whether you read every fashion magazine or avoid them like the plague, you are still the one that chooses what to put on in the morning.  You’re the one who looks ridiculous in those pictures from a decade ago.  And you’re the one who at age 9 refused to wear anything but cow boy boots.

Which brings me back to my original point, fashion is deeply personal.  Which brings me to my Madcapz.

 If you’ve read Our Story, you know why the caps are important to me.  But your reasons for putting on the cap are way more important. Maybe everything you own has polka-dots and you had to have a cap that did as well.  Maybe you play tennis every day and a hat with tennis rackets makes you smile.  Or maybe you have a friend who just really hates cats and you, being the loving and supportive friend that you are, bought her a cap filled with them.

All Jacqueline Needs to Run: A Cute Baseball Cap and A Good Pair of Shoes

I don’t run.  But I have listened to my friend, Jacqueline, complain and, at times, gloat about her experiences with the sport.

Running and Jacqueline have a pretty good relationship.  Sure, sometimes they go long periods without seeing each other, she’s cheated on him with swimming, and during college they had a dubious open relationship with yoga, but for the most part they’re pretty good.

Jacqueline and her running wardrobe have a less good relationship.  She never really bought into the whole if you look good while you work out you’ll be more likely to work out.  While I personally think a cute cap is a great motivator for exercise, I do like her explanation that “working out is for me, and the world does not get to tell me how to dress while I’m doing it.” She will wear the ratty t-shirt and the ugly shorts and you will all just have to look at her.

The problem with this philosophy is that she runs outside in the north east and the weather has a tendency to change.  And at the moment it’s quite cold. So I see her, as I do every year, cave on her “low maintenance runner credo” and don actual athletic gear.  On with the runners tights, the light weight shells, the black gloves and of course the cute women’s baseball caps.

What is that old popular saying? Something like, it all starts with the younger generation?  Well, in this case, it is 100 % correct!

Jesse Clements, 10, watches “World News with Diane Sawyer” almost every night with his mother, Kathleen McKelligott, a server at Red Lobster.  Inspired by the ABC’s “Made in America” series; Clements decided when it came time to submit his holiday wish list that he request that his gift be made in America.

Clements stated “I just want for Americans to have their jobs.  So by that I would need kids to ask their parents to get gifts made in America for their birthdays or Christmas.”  His mom, Kathleen added, ” Jesse, as a child, is sending a message to other kids to start thinking about asking their parents for gifts made in America for Christmas or their birthdays to get people back to worm and the help the economy.”

Jesse and Kathleen have joined “World News” Made in America Christmas! Are you willing to take the challenge?

Find your favorite and have a great Holiday Season!

As ABC’s video shows, Rebecca Conolly’s kindergarten class at Conder Elementary Arts Integrated Magnet School in Columbia, South Carolina proves you are never too young to learn about Made in America products.  After showing the students how Made in America labels look and reading the labels off of different items around the class; Conolly put the students to work.  Using blue squares, red stripes, and white stars the class began creating their individual versions of Made in America labels.  A few of the students venture around the school for more Made in America products at the end of ABC’s video.

How great to see a younger generation get so excited about products made in the USA!
