Fashion Accessories Are Having Their Day

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Every dog must have its day, and now is the time for fashion accessories to shine.

Women’s fashion has been struggling in this economy, but fashion accessories have been growing.  Click here to read an article on the growth of: Fashion Accessories

This makes sense to me.  If your fashion budget has shrunk, a new purse can update your wardrobe, without purchasing all new clothes.  And a purse can be worn more than a new shirt.

The article also gave a shout-out to my favorite accessory, women’s fashion hats, citing Kate Middleton’s wedding as placing a new emphasis on hats.

I’m not going to lie and say that if my fashion budget was unlimited I wouldn’t be constantly reinventing my wardrobe.  New clothes are fun to wear (and show off).  However, my budget is not unlimited, but I’m kind of ok with that.  New clothes are great.  But so are some of my “old” clothes. I’ve always preferred adding a couple of classic, wearable, new items that go with my old items to completely changing my wardrobe every season.  I think fashion accessories are one of the best ways to give your outfit a fresh new look, even if you’ve been wearing it since last fall.

Do you find that new fashion accessories are the most cost-effective way to update a look? Would you rather a new pair of shoes or a new blouse?

Olympic Uniforms: Egypt’s Controversy

Friday, July 27th, 2012

The Olympics start today, and in honor of that fact, I’m bringing you one last Olympic uniform controversy.

Click here to read an article about how Egypt has Nike and Adidas knock off uniforms: EGYPT’S OLYMPIC UNIFORMS

The gist of the article is that due to Egypt’s economic problems, they signed with a Chinese distributor who sold them knock off Nike and Adidas uniforms and fashion accessories.  The Egyptian government appeared to know that these were knock offs and are now in discussions with Nike on how to remedy the situation.

I understand that the economy is bad in Egypt and that buying designer brand uniforms might have been out of the question, but did they not think that Nike or Adidas would care?  I’m beginning to think all countries should just have to wear the same uniform so that it doesn’t become a question of which country can afford which clothes, a high school hallway situation on the world wide stage.  Yes, I’m suggesting a school uniform for the Olympics.

I’m excited for the actual games to begin.  I mean, does anyone remember what Michael Phelps was wearing last summer?

Are you sick of all the uniform and fashion accessory drama from the Olympics?  What do you think Olympic athletes should wear? What games are you most excited for?

Fashion Accessories: New Shoes

Friday, July 20th, 2012

My shoes tend to look beat up.  This is partially because I walk a lot.  It’s also because every new pair of shoes I get leaves my feet blistered, so once I’ve worn down the shoes and built up callouses I don’t want to bother doing that with any other pair of shoe, so I just wear the same pair forever.

Click here to read an article on why shoes have to be worn in: NEW SHOES

I feel like uncomfortable new shoes are fairly accepted in life, but you don’t expect to have to do this with any other fashion accessory or fashion item. You don’t get blisters on your neck from wearing a new necklace.  A new pair of earrings doesn’t leave me counting down the moments till I can take them off.  And Madcapz should be comfortable from the moment you put them on.  Clothing isn’t designed so that you have to stretch it out (I guess jeans are the exception to this, but I don’t expect my jeans to hurt the first time I wear them, unlike my shoes).

I guess my point is that shoes should be comfortable.  Considering that we can now ask our phone where the nearest deli and it will, using its own voice, tell you the answer, I feel like we should be able to create a comfortable shoe.

Do you find you have to wear in your shoes?  Do you have any tricks you use to making your shoes more comfortable?

Click here to read an article about: CATS AS HATS

To be completely honest, I am not a huge fan of cats. I’m pretty sure the only reason that cat is sitting on the person’s head is so that it is in a good place to rip out its owner’s brains.  Or, I guess, it might be surveying the surroundings to see the best point for a hostile takeover.  (What baffles me most is that cat owners not only agree with me on these points, but also seem to find these endearing qualities in their pet.)  I do have to admit, however, that these photos are pretty cute.

I also like the idea of a world in which cats were the hottest spring fashion trend.  Where cat ladies are suddenly a hot commodity.  Instead of a cute new purse, women would just carry around a cat as a fashion accessory (this would be very different from the dog in the purse fashion accessory, mostly due to the lack of purse).  And if cats could bear the insult of being carried around all of the time, they might like it, because it would be a great way to take over the world.

Are you a cat person (if you are you should check out our Kitty Crowd Madcapz)? Which is your favorite “cat hat”?

Fashion Accessories: The Purse

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Today, we are going to talk about the other woman’s fashion accessory: the purse.  While I can claim that you’re never fully dressed without a Madcapz , the truth of the matter is that you probably feel naked without your purse.

Click here to read: A Working Woman’s Guide To A Purse

To say that this article offers particularly novel tips would be a gross exaggeration, but I think that Monika Botkier’s, a New York based handbag designer, description of the size of the ideal bag to be helpful.  She suggests that it should be large enough to hold a pair of ballet flats, but not large high heel shoes, big enough for an IPad, but not a laptop, vast enough to hold a woman’s baseball cap, but not a sunhat (okay, I may have added that last one) . I also liked her suggestion of having a more fun tote when carrying larger items such as gym clothes, or paper files.

The only thing is that a part of me strongly believes that for the majority of women, a non-cluttered purse may be the Holy Grail of organized living. I think a solution may be to have one professional purse, where everything is in its proper place, and one large bag tucked under your desk, that holds everything you need to live.

What do you think of the article’s suggestion?  Is your purse organized? Do you wish it was organized?

Hunger Games in Fashion

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

I’m going to go ahead and assume you don’t live under a rock (and if you do, that’s some prime real estate you got there), so I think you probably know that the The Hunger Games is opening today. This dystopia based on the young adult series has an absurd amount of buzz, and has migrated to all sections of the internet.  Even fashion and fashion accessories (because when you think of dystopia, you automatically think “I wonder what they’re wearing”).

To be fair, this is a movie, and even films about dying children in Africa have a costume designer. And the Hunger Games, going mostly on the trailer, has some pretty cool costumes.

Click here for Judianna Makovsky’s discussion of her costume designs: Hunger Games Costumes

I always think that the creation of new worlds in movies and books is interesting, because to be believable the worlds have to have their own rules. These rules have to govern everything from what they eat to what they wear.  And what they wear has to be in line with the aesthetics of the production, be something that the character would wear, but also demonstrate the fashion rules of that particular type of culture.

On a side note, I also really like Elizabeth Bank’s giant purple flower fashion accessory (reminds me of some weird combination of Painted Posies Madcapz and Purple Passion Madcapz).

Are you a fan of the Hunger Games?  Are the costumes how you imagined them in the book?

Women’s Hats: Fun Winter Fashion Accessory

“Classy, practical, and cool,” three words Lisa Armstrong uses to describe women’s hats.  In this article, Armstrong discusses her opinion on why women stopped wearing hats; as well as share her personal perspective on wearing women’s hats

This article is a fun easy read, Madcapz would like to hear some other thoughts on hat wearing!
